The making of optics and thin film coatings go hand in hand. The range of coatings that optics require is very long; beam splitters, partial reflectors, high reflectors, anti-reflection, polarizing, polarization insensitive. Then there is the range of wavelengths; broadband, narrowband, dual wavelength, UV, Visible, IR. And finally there is the range technologies that can be used, thermal, e beam, sputtering and the enormous range of materials that each can handle, from Aluminum to Zinc Sulfide.
LightMachinery uses three coating chambers each with their own unique advantages. We also outsource a number of coatings to suppliers that we have qualified over many years, each of them with their own particular expertise.
Coatings need to be designed to be manufacturable and durable and this requires an intimate knowledge of the capabilities of each technology. The design process is detailed and complex but we have also created a simple tool to allow our customers to try their hand at designing their own coatings. You can try our ThinFilm CAD program online at by clicking here.
If you have questions or applications involving thin film coatings do not hesitate to contact
us to discuss the various parameters and trade-offs, remember to tell us about your polarization and wavelength range. Also include as much information about your application as possible, it helps us to make sure we design something that really meets your requirements. Free
advice is our specialty.

This sets of solid etalons are identical but they are coated for different wavelength ranges. |

White light enters the beam splitter and several colors emerge. This coating was designed for a very narrow wavelength range but produces vivid color effects outside the region of interest (as is often the case). |

These beam splitters don't look very special but looks can be deceiving. The broadband visible metal hybrid 50/50 coating creates very little color effect but producing very nice results in a Michelson interferometer. |
